June 2017 School's out for the summer!

Manatee Bay Parents,
Summer vacation has arrived! Yahoo!! Unfortunately, so is that dreaded Summer Slide. We've all worked hard to get them so very far, and then summer break comes and a good portion of it is lost.
To negate this effect, thank goodness the county and our fantastic school has provided your student with 4 wonderful resources to combat this: TenMarks, NEWSELA, iReady and myOn. To access these summer slide defector tools, have students login to their Broward SSO account and select each from the launchpad. (Need help? Emailtonia.wood@browardschools.com)

#1 myOn (Grades K-5)
This reading treasure is basically a digital library with quizzes. All students will need to do is select a book from the "Recommended" section of the Library tab and start reading. (As students perform well on the recommended quizzes, it will begin to recommend higher level books.) If you are planning to be without wi-fi, simply download up to 20 books ahead of time, read/take quizzes and all will be updated once the device gets wifi access again. As for devices, myOn will work to full capacity on any device, except for cell phones. Sounds familiar? Yes, we did have myOn last summer as well.

#2 NEWSELA (Grades 2-5)
NewsELA is a great way to practice informational reading skills. Students select an article related to current events to read and then take a quiz.
#3 iReady Reading (K-5) iReady Math (K-2)
Through each student's final diagnostic, work has already been differentiated and is ready to go. It's recommended to complete one lesson a week. An iReady log is attached, but this is for personal use only. (Manatee Bay is not requiring it to be filled or returned at the start of the school year in August.)

#4 TenMarks (Grades 2-5)
Similar to iReady, your student has been given lessons to help prepare for their next grade level and/or help them to continue to work on this year's challenging areas. In addition, there's also those great Jam Sessions!
One final resource...Don't forget the Broward County Public Library. So many great books and lots of happenings!! Be sure to check out their summer plans at the address below. While there, grab several books for Florida's Teacher of the Year and First Lady's Summer Literacy Adventure 2017.

MARCH 2017

Hello Third Grade Families!!
We’ve had a busy, fun, and exciting month.  Third Grade’s field day was a huge success.  The kids had a blast! Thank you to all of the parents who participated in this amazing event.

Testing, testing, testing!  That is the word on everyone’s mind.  We are working hard to help prepare your children for the FSA testing that begins the week of March.   To help better prepare your child, please have your child complete iReady reading lessons (and Math, too…if assigned by teacher.)  Read with your child.  Practice telling time and ask questions with elapsed time.  Make sure that your child has mastered all of their Math FACTS (multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction).

We will continue to work very hard in preparation of the upcoming FSA testing.  Thank you so much for all of your continued support in your child’s education.

Important Dates:
FSA ELA (Paper based) March 28-29, 2017
FSA Math (Computer based) April 20-21, 2017

January 2017

Welcome Back!!  Hope everyone had a fun and relaxing Winter Break!

Dear Third grade families, we had a short month filled with learning activities.  We spent the first week after winter break learning about Martin Luther King Jr. and his contribution to our country. We spoke about the qualities a good citizen should have and how good citizenship influences our school environment.

Third grade had a month of testing. Students took the BSA and iReady diagnostic. This assessments monitors students’ progress. We started to administer the B.A.S assessment to determine students’ growth in reading both in English and Spanish and we closed the month with literacy week.

Testing Schedule:
Jan. 20: BSA Math Part 1
Jan. 24: BSA Math Part 2
Jan. 30: BSA ELA  Part 1
Jan. 31: BSA ELA  Part 2

Next month: Field Trip on 2/1/17 to Jungle Island.

December 2016

Hi Third Grade Parents and Families -

It's amazing how fast time has flown to know we are closing out another year and welcoming a new one in 2017.  The children have had many opportunities during this holiday season to learn about giving back to others and helping those less fortunate in our communities through the food and toy drives, as well as Caps for Cancer.  Our 3rd graders have been working very hard covering the required standards through the portfolio curriculum and learning about and celebrating different cultures.  Some classes even researched and reported about their own special heritage with the various customs and traditions. For fun, the students enjoyed festive winter holiday celebrations and the Bay's traditional Polar Express Day in our jammies.

Please continue to have your children practicing to memorize all of their times tables and be able to relate these facts to division.  Relexmath.com is a great website to utilize if your child is struggling with fluency.  Also, our IReady requirement for reading is now aa minimum of 45 minutes per week so we greatly appreciate your assistance in allowing them time online.

As we return from Winter Break, please be aware that the 2nd round of BAS testing will be underway to hopefully see reading progress and growth in your child's ability to read and comprehend.  Also, the mid year IReady reading diagnostic will be administered to also help determine if growth and progress is being made.  Please encourage your child to give their best effort when taking the diagnostic test, as IReady can be used as promotion criteria in the event that they do not pass the FSA test in March.

From the entire 3rd grade team - we wish you a very healthy and Happy New Year for 2017!
